Mid-layer: fleece, sized to move under a shell
The mid-layer is where your warmth actually comes from, and grid fleece is the most useful version of it for people who work. The gridded interior traps warm air in its hollows while the channels between them let moisture and excess heat escape, so you get warmth that doesn't immediately turn into overheating when you pick up the pace.
