Short answer: It depends on where the UPF rating comes from. If the sun protection is built into the fabric itself — a tight weave, synthetic fibers like polyester or nylon, and darker or dyed yarns — it does not wash out and will last the useful life of the shirt. If the rating relies on a chemical UV-absorbing finish applied to the fabric, protection gradually fades, typically after roughly 30–40 wash cycles. Where does UPF actually come from?

UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) measures how much UV radiation a fabric blocks. A UPF 50+ fabric lets through less than 1/50th — about 2% — of UV rays. That blocking power comes from three sources, usually in combination:

  • Weave density. The tighter the weave or knit, the smaller the gaps between yarns for UV to pass through. This is the single biggest factor, and it's permanent — washing can't loosen a tight weave.
  • Fiber type and color. Polyester and nylon absorb UV far better than untreated cotton. Dyes, especially darker ones, absorb even more. Both are inherent to the material.
  • Chemical treatments. Some fabrics get a UV-absorbing finish (such as titanium-dioxide-based or benzotriazole-type absorbers) to boost a mediocre base fabric up to a higher rating. This is the only component that washes out over time.

A quality sun shirt earns most of its rating from the first two — construction, not coating. How do you know if your shirt's UPF is structural or chemical?

Manufacturers rarely spell this out, but there are reliable clues:

What actually degrades sun protection over time?

Even structural UPF isn't invincible. These are the real threats, roughly in order:

  • Stretching. Pulling a fabric taut opens the gaps between yarns. A shirt stretched tight across the shoulders can lose a meaningful chunk of its rating right where the sun hits hardest. This is one reason a slightly relaxed fit protects better than a compression-tight one.
  • Wetness. Most fabrics lose some UV-blocking ability when soaked, because water fills the fiber structure and transmits light. A quick-dry synthetic minimizes this window; cotton stays wet — and less protective — for hours.
  • Wear and thinning. Years of abrasion thin the yarns. If elbows and shoulders look faded and translucent, the protection there is reduced.
  • Chlorine and harsh chemicals. Pool chlorine and bleach degrade both fibers and UV finishes. Rinse a sun shirt in fresh water after swimming.
  • Repeated washing — but only for chemically treated fabrics. Interestingly, washing can slightly increase UPF in cotton because shrinkage tightens the weave.

How should you wash a UPF shirt to make it last?

Care is simple and mostly the same as for any technical fabric: machine wash cold on gentle with regular liquid detergent, skip fabric softener (it coats fibers and hurts wicking), skip bleach entirely, and hang dry or tumble low. When should you replace a sun shirt?

Replace it when the fabric tells you to, not on a calendar: visible thinning or translucency in high-wear zones, permanent stretch (a baggy, distorted knit that no longer recovers), rips or popped seams, or a chemically treated garment past a few years of regular washing. For a shirt worn hard 2–3 times a week all summer, expect roughly 2–3 seasons of full protection from a quality synthetic; occasional wear stretches that much further.

Because the most durable protection comes from weave density and synthetic fiber — not from proprietary coatings — the thing to read is the spec sheet, not the hang tag. Two questions cover it: what is the fiber content, and does the listing state an actual rating?

Is a regular t-shirt enough sun protection?
