What Is DWR? Why Your Jacket Stops Beading Water — and How to Fix It

Short answer: DWR stands for Durable Water Repellent — a microscopic chemical finish applied to the outer face of a fabric that makes water bead up and roll off instead of soaking in. It is not waterproofing. It sits on top of the fibers, wears off with abrasion and dirt after roughly 20–30 wears or 10–20 washes, and can usually be restored by washing the garment clean and then applying heat (tumble dry low or a warm iron with a cloth barrier). If heat alone doesn't work, a spray-on or wash-in reproofer will.

What does DWR actually do?

Every fabric has a surface energy. Water spreads across high-energy surfaces (cotton) and balls up on low-energy ones. DWR works by coating each individual fiber with a low-surface-energy polymer, creating a microscopic "forest" of hydrophobic spikes. Water droplets can't wet the gaps between them, so surface tension pulls them into beads that roll off.

That matters for two reasons:

  • You stay drier in light weather. Mist, drizzle, and splash never get past the face fabric.
  • You stay warmer and more breathable. A soaked face fabric is the real problem with "wetting out" — the saturated outer layer blocks vapor from escaping and conducts heat away from you. This is why a waterproof jacket can feel clammy inside even though it hasn't leaked.

Is DWR the same as waterproof?

No, and confusing the two is the single most common gear mistake. They are separate layers doing separate jobs.

A softshell jacket or a treated work pant typically has DWR and no membrane — it handles drizzle and dew well and fails in sustained rain, by design. A hardshell has both. Why did my jacket stop beading water?

DWR rarely "washes off" the way people assume. Four things degrade it, roughly in order of how often they're the culprit:

  1. Contamination. Body oils, sunscreen, bug spray, campfire smoke, and trail dust fill the gaps between the hydrophobic spikes. Water can now wet the surface even though the DWR is chemically intact. This is why a dirty jacket wets out and a clean one often beads again with no treatment at all.
  2. Abrasion. Pack straps, seatbelts, forearms, and shoulders wear the coating flat. Notice that wet-out almost always starts in those exact spots.
  3. Mechanical flattening. The polymer chains get pressed down over time. Heat re-erects them — that's the whole basis of the tumble-dry fix.
  4. Detergent residue. Regular detergents leave surfactants behind, and surfactants are engineered to make water spread. A residue-coated jacket is chemically the opposite of water repellent.

How do you restore DWR at home?

Work through these in order and stop as soon as water beads again. Most garments never make it past step 2.

  1. Wash it properly. Close all zippers and flaps. Use a technical wash or a very small amount of plain liquid detergent — never powder, never fabric softener, never bleach. Run an extra rinse cycle to clear residue.
  2. Add heat. Tumble dry on low for 20 minutes. If the care label says no tumble drying, iron on the lowest setting with a thin towel between the iron and the fabric. Heat is what re-activates a tired-but-present finish.
  3. Reproof only if needed. Spray-on treatments coat just the outer face and preserve breathability best — the right choice for a lined jacket. Wash-in treatments are faster and better for unlined shirts and pants. Apply to a clean, damp garment, then heat-set per step 2.
  4. Accept the wear spots. Once the face fabric itself is abraded thin, reproofing gets you partial performance at best.

What about PFAS and "PFC-free" DWR?

Traditional DWR used long-chain fluorocarbons (PFCs/PFAS), which repel both water and oil extremely well but persist in the environment. Regulation has moved fast: several U.S. states have restricted intentionally added PFAS in apparel, and most major brands have transitioned to PFC-free chemistries based on silicones, waxes, or hydrocarbons.

The honest tradeoff: PFC-free DWR repels water nearly as well but is noticeably worse at repelling oils — meaning body oil and sunscreen contaminate it faster. If your newer jacket seems to lose repellency quicker than your old one, that's usually why, not a defect. The fix is simply washing it more often.

Which garments actually need DWR?

Not everything. A base layer with DWR would be counterproductive — you want that layer to absorb and move sweat, not repel it. DWR belongs on outer layers that face weather:

  • Softshell jackets — the classic use case; DWR is what makes a breathable, non-membrane shell usable in drizzle. How long does DWR last?

Roughly 20–30 days of active wear, or 10–20 wash cycles, before performance drops noticeably. Heavy pack use or dusty conditions shorten that considerably. Regular cleaning extends it more than anything else you can do.

Can I put a DWR jacket in the dryer?

Yes, if the care label allows it — low heat for about 20 minutes is the standard revival method. If the label prohibits tumble drying, use a low-setting iron with a towel between the iron and the garment.

Does fabric softener ruin DWR?

Yes. Fabric softener and most standard detergents leave surfactant residue that actively attracts water. Use a dedicated technical wash, or a minimal dose of plain liquid detergent with an extra rinse.

Is a DWR-treated jacket enough for rain?

For drizzle, mist, and short showers, yes. For sustained or heavy rain, no — you need a waterproof membrane. Think of DWR as the first line of defense that keeps a waterproof jacket breathing properly, not as waterproofing itself.

Can I reproof a UPF sun shirt?

You can, but it's usually unnecessary and can slightly reduce breathability. Sun shirts are designed to move moisture and dry fast, not to shed it.
