If you sweat a lot, the fabric does most of the work. Choose polyester or nylon — knit or woven — and skip 100% cotton for anything high-output. Wicking fabrics do not soak sweat up like a towel; they pull it off your skin, spread it across the outer surface, and let it evaporate, so the shirt stays light instead of turning into a wet weight on your back. What "Moisture-Wicking" Actually Means

Wicking is capillary action. Synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon barely absorb water into the fiber itself — polyester's moisture regain is famously low — so liquid has nowhere to go but along the tiny channels between fibers and yarns. Those channels pull sweat outward to the face of the fabric, where it spreads over a wide surface area and evaporates fast.

Cotton does the opposite. Each cotton fiber drinks water into itself and holds it. That's excellent in a bath towel and terrible in a shirt at mile six: the fabric gets heavy, clings, chafes, and stops moving air. Once a cotton shirt is saturated, it can only dry at rest — which is exactly when you don't need it.

Two practical consequences follow from that mechanism:

  • Wicking is a structure, not a coating. The yarn geometry and knit or weave do the work. That's why a genuine quick-dry shirt keeps wicking for years, while a "treated" cotton tee stops after a handful of washes.

Note the honest ranking: for pure sweat management, polyester wins and cotton loses. But cotton isn't worthless — it's just the wrong tool for high output. Where nylon beats polyester

Both wick. 1. Venting, especially across the back

Wicking moves sweat to the surface. Airflow is what actually takes it away. A shirt with a mesh or vented back panel dumps heat exactly where a pack, a tool belt or a truck seat traps it. Care: How to Keep a Wicking Shirt Wicking

  • Wash cold, tumble dry low. High heat can distort synthetic fibers and set odor.
  • No fabric softener, ever. It coats the fibers and blocks the capillary channels that make the shirt work.

What is the best fabric for someone who sweats a lot?

Polyester, in a lightweight quick-dry weave or knit. It wicks the most aggressively and dries fastest, which is what heavy sweating demands. Nylon is a close second with a smoother, stretchier feel. Avoid 100% cotton for any high-output activity.

Is moisture-wicking the same as breathable?

No. Wicking is about moving liquid sweat off the skin to the fabric surface. Breathability is about letting water vapor and air pass through the fabric. A good hot-weather shirt needs both, which is why vented back panels and open weaves matter alongside fiber choice.

Do moisture-wicking shirts smell worse than cotton?
